We downloaded and tried out Zendo, the new messenger app that uses the unbreakable one-time pad encryption system, the Holy Grail of cryptography. What makes the one-time pad system unbreakable is that the two parties exchanging messages must first meet to exchange the encryption keys that are random and not based on any algorithm. Zendo requires the same, you must meet and scan a QR code with anyone you want to message which then gives both of you the same keys in which to encrypt and decrypt messages. Some might see this as a hassle. We think it’s a cool excuse to have a coffee with a friend and add an element of exclusivity to your contact list.
The cryptography is elegantly integrated into a messenger app that is streamlined and ergonomic. The signup process is super quick, 30 seconds quick. Here are some screenshots from the app. As you can see there is an emphasis on simplicity and security:
