Justin Moreira, a 21-year-old Hyannis, Massachusetts man has been arrested and charged for the attempted purchase of a handgun and an accompanying silencer from an unnamed “Darknet Market” using bitcoin.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Massachusetts events played out as follows, “[B]eginning in January 2015, Moreira engaged a federal undercover agent in a series of online messages during which Moreira inquired about the potential purchase of several different firearms. Ultimately, Moreira allegedly ordered a Walther PPK/S .380 caliber pistol and silencer from the agent for which he paid the equivalent of $2,500 in Bitcoins. Moreira instructed the agent to ship the package to a Post Office box in Hyannis [Massachuesetts]. Federal agents monitoring the Post Office box immediately arrested Moreira after he retrieved the package this morning.”
Based on his poor digital hygiene it comes as no surprise that Moreira was already a convicted felon before being nabbed by the feds. He was convicted of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute in 2013 in Barnstable County.
Some notable details from his previous conviction were put forth by the Barnstable police describing the take, “a multitude of drugs, including baggies of powdered Ketamine and Ecstasy, and more than 90 OxyContin pills.” It’s also worth mentioning that police seized $30,000 in fiat, a digital scale and gelitin capsules – articles often associated with “homeopathic medicine”. /s
